Jack Johnston, Executive Director of HARP and Ray Perez, Senior Associate at Matrix Design Group will be presenting an overview of the design challenges for Veterans Pedestrian Bridge at the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo (HARP).
HARP is a popular urban waterfront tourist destination and an integral part of downtown Pueblo. Part of the Union Commercial District, HARP provides a reminder of the great Pueblo Flood that devastated Pueblo in the early 1920's. The Riverwalk's current location serves the community by revitalizing a segment of the river that was previously seen as a blight to downtown Pueblo. An important part of Pueblo's Urban Renewal Plan, HARP's urban development transformed the community and has been vital in attracting new businesses and stabilizing the economic base of the city. As part of this process, there arose an idea to construct not only a functional pedestrian bridge, but one that would honor all who truly comprise Pueblo's proud claim "the Home of Heroes". A veteran's monument, honoring all military service men and women, became the goal. Angelo's Pizza Parlor is located adjacent to the Riverwalk, which will allow members to see the bridge immediately following the presentation.
